District to relocate 6th grade to Mathews Jr. Sr. High School to begin 2022-2023 school year

6th grade moves

April 28, 2022

Dear Mathews families,

We have some exciting news that we would like to share with you!  Our district has made the decision to move our sixth grade students from Baker Elementary School to Mathews Jr. Sr. High School to begin the 2022-2023 school year.

We recognize that, in many ways, 6th grade is a year of significant transition for students.  Not only are they experiencing many developmental changes, but they are also having to learn and work more independently than they have in previous years

We believe the transition of sixth grade to Mathews Jr. Sr. High School will allow us to foster greater independence and organizational skills among these students.  It will also provide them with greater opportunities as we will be able to operate under a full middle school model with grades 6, 7 and 8 all under the same roof. Our six grade students will be able to experience quarterly rotations, which include gym, a technology course, a study skills course and art, all of which are taught by teachers who’ve been licensed in those specific fields.  Our students will also transition from twice-a-week music instruction to daily music instruction in either band or choir.

We understand that families may have questions about this transition.  We invite you to call either Mathews Jr. Sr. High Principal George Garrett or Baker Elementary School Principal Mike King at 330-637-3500.  They would be happy to answer your questions.  We are also planning a sixth grade open house and orientation for our students and their families over the summer.
