MHS students building relationships with Currie students through monthly visits
Mathews High School HERD students have been coming to Currie Elementary once a month since October. This is a joint effort between Mathews High School and Currie Elementary - and organized by Samantha Lantz, Currie Guidance and Julie Berkhouse, Mathews High School counselor.
Each month, a group of HERD students visit a different grade level. The students prepare a 30 minute lesson for the Currie students, which typically includes a story and an accompanying activity.
In October, the high school students went into the kindergarten classes and read a pumpkin-themed book. The kindergarten students created their own pumpkins. In November, the high school students visited first grade and read a Thanksgiving-themed book. The first grade students painted their own turkeys. In December, the high school students went into 2nd grade classrooms and read a snowflake themed book and students created their own snowflakes.
Our HERD students plan to continue visiting each month until the end of the school year.
