Art Courses

ART I (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12
CONTENT: Art I is a course which is designed for the beginning student to learn the basic elements of art such as line, form, space, value, balance, texture and dominance as well as specific art techniques unique to their media. New techniques, many types of media, history, styles, new concepts, usage of equipment, methods of presentation and opportunities for self-expression will also be included. Individualized instruction will be offered by the instructor to help problem solving skills.  Mandated Art Show entry of two artworks is required as well as attendance to the yearly event.

ART II (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 10-12
CONTENT: Art II is a course which is designed for the continuation of exploration of techniques and knowledge obtained from Art 551 with a focus on independent problem solving. Students will explore many types of media, history, styles, new concepts, usage of equipment, methods of presentation and opportunities for self-expression. Students will work independently from the techniques mastered from Art I.  Mandated Art Show entry of two artworks is required as well as attendance to the yearly event.
 
ART III (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 11
CONTENT: Art III is a course designed for advanced work and study in the areas of drawing, sculpture, ceramics, painting, animation design, and Art History. Advanced concepts and varying formats will be presented. The student will have the opportunity to become involved with more demanding and independent projects. The keeping of an art notebook is suggested and an electronic portfolio will be developed. Mandated Art Show entry of two artworks is required as well as attendance to the yearly event.

ART IV (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 12
CONTENT: This course deals with studio problems and solutions. Students will create a body of work which reflects exploration, experimentation and development. Their artwork should represent an evolution of creative and critical thinking. An electronic portfolio will be developed. Mandated Art Show entry of two artworks is required as well as attendance to the yearly event.


Music Courses

BAND (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12
CONTENT: Participation is mandatory in both marching band and concert band. Marching band consists of performing at varsity football games, area band nights and various local parades along with participation in summer rehearsals and band camp. Concert band consists of mandatory participation in winter and spring concerts, Memorial Day parade, graduation ceremonies and O.M.E.A. district and state band contest (to be determined by the director). Participation in O.M.E.A. Solo and Ensemble competition will be encouraged but is not mandatory.


MUSIC APPRECIATION (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12
CONTENT: This course is designed to give students a well-rounded appreciation for music. Units in this course include basic music theory, technology, and composition, as well as a look at early music and music from around the world. There is no prerequisite or previous music experience necessary.


CONCERT CHOIR (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12
CONTENT: Membership is open to all high school students who want to sing, regardless of ability level. The course will add various levels of vocal technique and musicianship skills. Emphasis will be placed on the development of men’s and women’s voices through quality choral literature of various styles. The choir will perform at evening concerts during the year, for school and community events, festivals and adjudicated events at the director’s discretion. Attendance by participating members is required at all performances. Students are encouraged, but not required to, participate in choir for the length of their high school careers. 


HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12
CONTENT: This class will focus on the development of rock and roll music beginning with ragtime and blues through the decades leading to the birth of rock and roll, on to the development of current pop and rap music. We will explore these musical developments and their effects on society and culture through song analysis, group discussions, and class activities. No musical background or experience is necessary for this course.

INTRODUCTION TO MUSICAL THEATER (1 credit)
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12
CONTENT: This course is designed to develop the knowledge and appreciation of musical theater and film music. A large portion of the course will focus on the development of musical theater and include in depth analysis of many specific musicals. During the film music segment of the course, students will watch and listen to video and musical examples outlining the development of film music from films in the early 1900s to current film music and the composers behind it. There is no musical background or experience necessary for this course.
