As part of our commitment to transparency and student privacy, we are providing our annual update regarding the educational technology, web resources, and school-issued devices used by our students, along with important notice regarding Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB29).
This annual notification outlines how student devices are monitored and when District access may occur.
Key SB29 & District Policy Points
Permissible Monitoring
Mathews Local Schools may monitor school-issued devices and educational web platforms for legitimate educational purposes, including:
Instructional management and support
Technical support and troubleshooting
Online exam proctoring
Compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA)
Additional Circumstances for Device Access
Under Ohio law, the District may also access or monitor student devices under specific circumstances, such as:
Execution of a judicial warrant
Locating lost or stolen devices
Responding to an immediate threat to life or safety
Complying with federal or state laws or funding program requirements
Types of Activity Monitored
Depending on the situation, educational monitoring tools may review web browsing activity, keystrokes, location tracking (for lost devices), or audio/visual feeds (such as during proctored testing).
Note: Mathews Local Schools has not added new monitoring practices; this communication serves as an annual compliance update required under SB29 to keep our community fully informed.
Notification Procedures
If your child's specific device is accessed under non-routine circumstances (such as a safety investigation or location search), the District will notify you within 72 hours. This notification will outline:
The reason the device was accessed
The specific actions taken
Any safety concerns involved
Examples of Everyday Technology Support & Safety
Instructional Management: Teachers may view active student screens during class to ensure students remain focused on educational materials.
Tech Support: Our IT team may remotely connect to a student's device to resolve technical issues or update software.
Exam Integrity: Online testing environments may utilize proctoring features to ensure fair and secure testing.
Safety Concerns: If potential harm or safety threats are identified, school administrators may access device logs to protect student well-being.
Our Commitment to Privacy
