Last week, students in Mrs. Konerth’s math classes got an early start celebrating Pi Day (3/14) with some fun Pi(e)-themed activities. 🥧➗
On Friday, students graphed the digits of pi, plotted points on a coordinate plane to create the π symbol, completed a pi-themed puzzle and even enjoyed some pie. The fun also included a round of the game Pie Face, and even Mr. Garrett joined in on the action!

Kindergarten students at Mathews Elementary School recently celebrated the 100th Day of School with fun, hands-on learning!
💯Students wore shirts decorated with 100 items and showed them off during a parade through the 1st and 2nd grade classrooms.
💯Throughout the day, they took part in exciting 100th Day activities. They made necklaces using 100 Fruit Loops, created 100-item snack mats, and practiced counting by building 10 scoops of ice cream with 10 sprinkles on each.

Mathews Local Schools proudly recognizes David Ottney, our district’s nominee for the Mahoning Valley Educators of the Year. Last night, he was among 42 educators honored at a recognition dinner hosted by the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber. Although he was not selected as a category winner, Mr. Ottney was recognized at the event and received a commemorative sculpture celebrating his dedication to education!

Second grade had a paws-itively amazing 101st Day of School! Students celebrated in true Dalmatian style by completing math mystery Dalmatian pictures, writing about 101 things, learning fun facts about Dalmatians, and playing a lively game of “Doggy, Doggy, Where’s My Bone?” We topped off the day with some snacks and a showing of 101 Dalmatians! 🐾

Mrs. Lantz’s 9th grade ELA students are preparing to read Romeo & Juliet by exploring Shakespeare’s language. Students recently focused on how Shakespeare uses insults to reveal character, build tension and add humor. They then created their own Shakespeare-style “roasts” using adjectives and nouns. From “frothy beef-witted canker-bossom” to “saucy tickle-brained toad,” the activity brought plenty of laughs. As they read the play, students will continue identifying and analyzing these insults in the text. 🎭
For the past few months, some of our 5th grade students have been spending Friday mornings visiting kindergarten classrooms for a special half-hour of fun and learning.
Together they have:
✨ Made crafts
🎲 Learned and played board games
📖 Shared reading time
This buddy program has created meaningful connections between our students, and it’s been a joy to see both grade levels learn and grow together. We love watching our Mustangs support one another!

Spanish I students at Mathews High School practiced writing compliments in Spanish using personality trait vocabulary and the verb ser. Students created Valentine’s Day boxes and exchanged thoughtful messages written in Spanish, reinforcing their writing skills in a fun and meaningful way!

Students in Mrs. Leslie Konerth’s math classes spent the week of February 9 diving into football-themed activities (just in time for the Super Bowl!) while learning how to collect and display data using histograms.
Here’s what they worked on:
🧠 Brain Teaser Challenge: Students decoded clues to figure out NFL team names (ex: marine mammal = Dolphins, Dodge truck = Rams, thieves = Steelers). The number of correct answers became their first data set for creating histograms.
🏈 Paper Football Field Goals: Students attempted field goals with paper footballs and recorded how many they made. That data was used to build another histogram.
🎮 Virtual Field Goal Game: Final scores from an online field goal game were collected and turned into histograms as well.

Classroom Spotlight: Samantha Lantz’s Students 🎭
In preparation for beginning their drama unit, students participated in a fun and interactive activity designed to build confidence with dramatic language, timing and delivery. Working in pairs, students practiced “one-liners” by drawing a random line or situation from one envelope and a delivery tone from another.
The results were entertaining and educational. Tones ranged from whispers and angry rants to raps and pompous royal addresses, and everything in between! This lesson helped students understand how important stage directions are in shaping how a character’s lines should be delivered on stage!

Here’s what our young artists have been creating lately!
🖌 Kindergarten explored symmetry and color theory with paint transfers.
❄ First Grade wrapped up adorable winter collages while learning about the 10 Famous Lines, watercolor resist, and exaggeration.
⛄ Second Grade experimented with watercolor techniques and designed “Pop Art” snowmen, using their own creativity for faces and accessories.
❄ Third Grade learned about radial symmetry, read Snowflake Bentley, and created “found object art” snowflakes by stamping paint with everyday objects.
❤️ Fourth & Fifth Grades studied artist Alma Woodsey Thomas and created beautiful gradient hearts inspired by her work.
