The optional project allowed students to earn bonus points while demonstrating their understanding in a creative way. Some students produced videos with slides to accompany rap performances. Others performed a Bollywood-style song and dance, complete with props and a live audience that included Mr. Garrett!

A story came to life this week! Students in Jailynne Cronin’s library classes enjoyed a special visit from some furry friends, including five baby bunnies while preparing to read The Velveteen Rabbit! Students had the chance to pet the bunnies and suggest names for the new babies. The bunnies belong to teacher Etta Atwell, who will review all the suggestions before making the final naming decisions!

Mathews Elementary students recently wrapped up their Winter Reading Challenge.
Students completed reading activities at home such as reading in pajamas, enjoying a book with hot cocoa, learning about winter animals, reading a favorite recipe and reading in a blanket fort.
For each completed activity, students earned one ticket for a prize drawing. The more activities completed, the more chances students had to win.
A total of 38 students participated, completing 294 reading activities.
Tessa Dolan won the Winter Reading Challenge prize basket, and Zack Stokes won a bag of candy.
Great job to all Mathews Mustangs who participated and kept reading this winter.

Each St. Patrick’s Day, our Mathews Elementary second graders put their creativity to the test by designing and setting up homemade leprechaun traps around the classroom!
Unfortunately, those tricky leprechauns escaped again this year, but not without causing a little mischief! They left behind glitter, coins and a rainbow pencil on each desk. Each trap also had a special surprise, including a note, a shamrock and a spinning top.
Maybe next year will be the year we finally catch them! 🌈🍀
