Our fifth-grade students have been working hard to prepare for our Veterans Day Ceremony! They’ve written letters and created artwork to express their gratitude for the men and women who have served our country.
On Monday, students will share these special messages with Vietnam veteran Jeffrey Dreves, who will deliver them to members of VFW Post 3521. Mr. Dreves will also share his personal experiences with our K-5 students!

FUNDRAISER PICK UP:
We would like to thank all of our elementary students who participated in this year's Fall Fundraiser. As promised, our delivery day is Monday, November 4th at Mathews Elementary. The pick up times will be from 2:30-4:45 and all items will be distributed from the front doors of the multipurpose room, facing the parking lot. Those wishing to pick up between 2:45-3:15 will need to park in the parking lot and walk to the multipurpose room doors to retrieve their items. Please keep in mind that the parking lot is very full at that time, as it is at the time of dismissal. Where possible, families are encouraged to pick items up after 3:15 to avoid congestion.
Since these are mainly frozen items, arrangements must be made to have someone pick them up during the allotted times.
Thank you again to all who participated and contributed!!!
Sixth-grade students in Leslie Koenerth's class at Mathews Junior Senior High School participated in "Pumpkin Math" — a creative, hands-on lesson designed to bring math concepts to life. This interactive activity introduced students to core statistical principles, including median, mode, mean and range by measuring pumpkin stems and circumferences. Students also had the chance to explore estimation skills by counting pumpkin seeds.
Our Mathews students had a great time at the OMEA District 5 Honors Choir! Special shoutout to choir teacher Grace Jerasa, who served as the middle school honors choir chair and planned the middle school portion of the festival. Their guest conductor, Ms. Jennifer Rozsa from the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Choir, inspired our young singers! The high school choir, led by Mr. Cody Mott of PennWest Edinboro University, took on a challenging group of songs, and our students rose to the occasion!

This week, all of our schools are celebrating Red Ribbon Week!
Last Friday, Mathews Elementary kicked things off with a focus on making healthy choices. Our students are learning the importance of staying drug-free and making decisions that help them grow strong and healthy!

We're teaming up with Lordstown Schools to collect essential household and toiletry items for families impacted by Hurricane Helene.
If you feel compelled to donate, there are many options available:
1. On the attached flyer, there is a QR code for a list of items needed that can be purchased and delivered directly to Lordstown Schools (flyer can be found here: https://www.mathewslocal.org/article/1840903)
2. Additionally, the flyer also details the address and drop off dates/times for any donations.
3. Lastly, if you bring the items to Mathews Elementary by Wednesday October 30th, Mrs. Hilliard and/or Mrs. Lantz will gladly take the items to the drop off location for you.
Please note that the items they are needing are household and toiletry items (paper towels, diapers, wipes, paper plates, utensils, soap, toothbrushes, etc., new blankets, socks, gloves, jackets, hats, etc.) - NOT canned foods.
A number is listed in the flyer if you have any questions, or please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Lantz or Mrs. Hilliard.

A special thank you to community member Nick DeChristafaro for his generous donation! Thanks to Nick, every student in grades K through 5 will receive a pumpkin to take home over the next few days. The pumpkins are just the right size for easy carrying, and many can even fit in book bags! 🎃

Mathews' sixth-grade students participated in their annual cemetery walk this morning, hosted in collaboration with the Vienna Historical Society. Students explored the Vienna Township Cemetery, learning about the early settlers and the rich history of the community. Guided by members of the Vienna Historical Society, they uncovered stories behind tombstones and discovered notable figures such as Abiel Bartholomew, the first recorded burial in 1805, and prominent locals like Ithel F. Mathews and Beryl Baker.

Our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders had special visitors this week! A big thank you to the Vienna and Fowler Fire Departments for stopping by to talk to our students about fire safety. The kids learned important tips on how to stay safe in case of an emergency!
