Students in Samantha Megyesi’s fourth grade ELA classes are diving into the essential question: “In what ways can you help your community?”

As part of their new Wonders reading series, they’ve been exploring books such as Remembering Hurricane Katrina, Aguinaldo and Partaking in Public Service, all of which highlight different ways people support and uplift their communities.

Inspired by Aguinaldo, our fourth graders are putting these lessons into practice by writing letters and creating holiday cards for residents at a local nursing home. Their cards will be delivered before the holidays to spread joy!

Our third-grade students have been diving into the new Wonders Reading Series to explore the Essential Question: “How Do People Make Government Work?”

They read Vote! by Eileen Christelow, Every Vote Counts, and A Plan for the People to help them understand elections and why voting matters. To bring the lesson to life, students took part in a classroom voting activity, complete with “I Voted” stickers provided by Mrs. Sinkovich! This hands-on experience helped them better understand how elections work at both the local and national levels.

Students also created their own Mathews Elementary School licenses as their “voter registration,” practicing commas and correctly writing their full addresses along the way. 🇺🇸

Our second grade students in Wendy Gibson’s class begin each math block by counting how many days they’ve been in school. They use patterns to see whether the number can be counted by 2s, 3s, 5s, or 10s, which helps them recognize number sequences. After counting, students enjoy math songs that reinforce concepts like telling time, money and shapes. They also participate in a daily timed math fact practice. During the second nine weeks, they’ll be working hard to master their subtraction facts!

Our second graders in Kristen Freudenrich’s class have been busy learning all about clouds and weather! They read Tornado by Betsy Byars, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett, and Clouds by Tomie dePaola to learn how clouds form and what they can tell us about weather. To bring their learning to life, students created their own “Cloud in a Bottle.” By building up air pressure inside a bottle and releasing it quickly, they watched a cloud form right before their eyes!

🇺🇸 Honoring Our Heroes at Mathews Schools 🇺🇸

Mathews High School held its annual Veterans Day ceremony, bringing students and staff together to honor the men and women who have served our nation.

The program began with the National Anthem, followed by student readers who shared the history of our armed forces, highlighting major conflicts throughout U.S. history. Students and staff with family members who served were recognized as each era was acknowledged. A White Table display in the cafeteria provided a meaningful reminder of those missing in action or held as prisoners of war, giving students a chance to learn about the symbolism behind each item.

Meanwhile, at Mathews Elementary, Mrs. McIntyre’s 5th grade ELA students wrote letters and created artwork to show appreciation for our veterans. Some letters were taken home to share with family members, and the rest will be delivered to local veterans clubs to honor their service.

Thank you to all who have served. Your courage and sacrifice are appreciated!

Mathews High School is proud to recognize three students who recently took part in Civic Day, an event that offers students a firsthand look at how local government and public service operate.

Rilee Paddock spent the day with Charles Ciapala, Veterans Service Officer at the Trumbull County Veterans Service Commission. Alexis Cornelius shadowed Robert Patton, Presiding Judge of the 11th Court of Appeals, gaining valuable insight into the judicial process, and Kylie Garrett joined George Garrett, Principal of Mathews High School, to learn more about leadership within the education system.

With guidance from the Vienna Historical Society, our 6th grade students explored the Vienna Township Cemetery this morning, learning about the lives of the area’s early settlers and the stories behind the symbolism found on tombstones. Historical Society members shared stories about the cemetery’s origins, which date back to 1805, and pointed out the graves of notable figures such as Ithel F. Mathews, a name that continues to live on through the district’s schools.
