Exciting progress at Mathews Elementary! Our new gym is really starting to take shape — the walls are going up, and each day brings us closer to welcoming students into this new space.

Steel beams are up and taking shape! Crews have been hard at work on our new elementary gymnasium since April, and we're excited to see the project moving forward.
Once completed in December 2025, the gym will:
- Give our elementary students a dedicated gymnasium, no longer sharing space with the cafeteria
- Provide additional space for high school athletic teams to practice and train
We’ll continue to share progress along the way!

It’s been 45 years since Mathews High School last held graduation inside the school building — all the way back in 1980. This past Sunday, we brought the tradition back indoors — but this time, in a space that looks much different!
Congratulations to the Class of 2025! Your journey is just beginning, and we’re so proud of all you’ve accomplished.

As summer approaches, our elementary students have been diving into something important — Water Safety! During the last few days of school, students have been learning how to stay safe around pools, beaches, waterparks and boats. With drowning being the second leading cause of accidental death for children ages 5–14 (CDC), these lessons could save a life. Drowning is silent and can happen in just 20–60 seconds — awareness is key!
On Friday, the Mathews Local School District came together in a powerful show of support for our elementary secretary, Julie Sethman. Staff in both schools surprised her by wearing purple shirts—a symbol of strength, hope and unity—as she courageously battles cancer. Julie, your Mathews family is behind you every step of the way!

Over the past three weeks, first grade students in Mrs. Hilty’s class have learned about informational writing and the publishing process. They worked together to brainstorm topics, research rainforest animals, write and illustrate drafts, revise and edit their work, and create a final copy! To celebrate all their hard work, the class held a Published Authors Popcorn Party! 🍿

Our 5th grade students had a great field trip to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. While the original plan was to see Balto—the famous sled dog with local ties—our students were also able to get hands-on lesson about Ohio's Indigenous Cultures! Led by museum instructor Mr. Aivery, students looked at artifacts from four periods of human history, covering more than 14,000 years before Europeans arrived!
